Popeye the Sailor is an American cartoon character made by Elzie Crisler Segar. The character first appeared in the everyday King Characteristics comic strip Thimble Theatre on January 17, 1929, along with Popeye became the strip’s title name in later decades.
The character has also appeared in television and theatrical animated cartoons. Segar’s Thimble Theatre strip was first in its 10th season after Popeye made his introduction, but the one-eyed sailor immediately became the most important focus of the strip.
Thimble Theatre became one of King Features’ most well-known properties throughout the 1930s.
After Segar died in 1938, Thimble Theatre was continued by numerous artists and writers, most especially Segar’s helper Bud Sagendorf. The strip continues to appear in first-run installations in its Sunday edition, written and drawn by Hy Eisman. The daily strips are reprints of older Sagendorf stories.
