An optical instrument designed to create distant objects appear closer, containing an arrangement of lenses, or of curved mirrors and lenses, by which rays of light are gathered and focused and the subsequent image magnified. However, most telescopes now use curved mirrors to gather light from the night skies. The shape of the lens or mirror in a telescope concentrates lighting. That light is what we see when we look into a telescope.
